Master Justin DeVaull, MSAOM, L.Ac.
Founder, Chief Instructor, Resident Clinician
The Center of Harmony was conceived as a place where people from all walks of life could gather for perpetual training in classical martial arts, meditation, and where people could find relief from physical pain/disharmony and refuge from spiritual angst.
Master DeVaull, known as Sah Bum Nim ("Teacher") to his students, began training in martial arts at 10 yrs old. At age 15, he began studying Chan Buddhism and became a novice priest by the age of 18 (fully ordained ten years later in 2009). He became one of the youngest martial arts Masters when received the title during a transmission ceremony in 2004, when he was 23. His interest in understanding the human condition lead him to pursue a B.A. in Philosophy & Religion from the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, wherein he specialized in Asian Studies and Analytical Philosophy.
Desiring tools to help alleviate suffering, he studied Traditional Oriental Medicine for two years at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine graduate school in New York City and for two more years at the Finger Lakes School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine of New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls. In 2008 he obtained a Master of Science in Acupuncture from FLSAOM, and received a Master of Science in Chinese Herbal Medicine in 2009. He is a New York State Licensed Acupuncturist.
Believing strongly in the value of classical martial arts practice, he emphasizes daily cultivation to promote longevity, happiness, and peace. The unique synergy of programs and services offered at the Center reflect his desire to weave many traditions which where once unified, then separated over time, back together in way that is accessible to modern people.
His pedagogical philosophy focuses on providing an environment conducive for the development of Bodhisattva's and Qi Healers, not mere competative athletes. Students and parents of children training under his instruction often remark on the positive and often profound changes they experience through continued practice.
As a clinician, he views each patient as an opportunity to serve humanity. Recently, he moved with his wife into a suite above the clinic so that he can be available to help students and patients in need. Trained in classical acupuncture needle methods, he employs subtle energy movements to achieve lasting results in a gentle and relaxing experience. As an herbalist, he formulates decoctions and formulas to meet the dynamic of "root & branch" in disease - whereby improvement in (or resolution of) the condition is the side-effect of the treatment.
Master DeVaull takes patients at various times throughout the day/week. To avoid waiting, please call ahead to make an appointment. Out of respect for their continued efforts, Sah Bum Nim's formal students enjoy half-price discounts for many clinic services.
