| On Vesak in 2009, the Center of Harmony established its Dharma Study Program to provide guidance and resources to those wishing to expand their knowledge of Buddhism. Courses of study are open to formal Dharma students (i.e. those who have taken the Three Refuges). Those wishing to pursue meditation-only are welcomed to do so, but those wishing to undertake Dharma Study are required to also partake in Chan practice (formally). While the program length is indefinate and ongoing, its students progress through program requirements over time and may achieve instructional responsibilities as Assistant Dharma Teachers, and eventually ordination as Dharma Teachers and Senior Dharma Teachers.
Buddhism has many facets, styles, and traditions. Our Dharma Study Program embraces these differences and explores a wide range of subjects, practices, figures, symbols, art, and literature. Students begin with an historical survey which spans Indian, Ghandaran, Chinese, Korean, and Japanese civilizations as they pertain to the spread of Buddhism.
Once a synopsis is obtained, the student delves into:
- Traditional Buddhist nomenclature (Sanskrit, Pali, Chinese)
- Branches of Buddhism & Schools of Thought
- Sutras, Commentaries, & Chants
- Art, Symbols, & Iconography
- Research into areas of interest, etc.
Course Structure
The Dharma Study Program is comprised of one hour weekly seminar styled courses with a rotating curriculum. All course materials are provided free in the online library and there is no charge for the program. Students are expected to print required readings and maintain notebooks for each, along with notes taken during lectures and presentations.
